Job description


The Sahel Alliance aims to strengthen coordination and focus on key sectors, improve efficiency, rapidity and proximity through innovative methods and strengthen development aid accountability in the Sahel. The Alliance focuses on supporting structures closest to populations, working most intensely with local authorities, the private sector, farmers' and village associations and Non-Governmental-Organizations (NGOs). The Alliance is a group of twelve donors organized around six thematic pillars, each of which is piloted by one of the six founding members: Agriculture-food security (African Development Bank), decentralization - basic services (Germany), youth employability (France), energy and climate (World Bank), governance (United Nations Development Programme, UNDP), internal security (European Union). The Sahel Alliance Coordination Unit (Unité de Coordination de l'Alliance - UCA) ensures the management and coordination of the Alliance. It was initially based at the Agence Française du Dévelopement (AFD) and is now managed by GIZ in the context of a rotating mandate. The Coordination Unit is based in Brussels.






Your tasks


  • Preparing and coordinating high-level meetings among members of the Sahel Alliance, the Permanent Secretariat of the G5 Sahel and the authorities of G5 Sahel member countries and ensuring follow-up and reporting concerning these meetings
  • Liaising consistently and systematically to the head of the Steering Committee of the Sahel Alliance (currently Germany - represented by the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development)
  • Advising the head of the Steering Committee as to how the aims of the Sahel Alliance can best be achieved
  • Initiate and monitor the implementation of projects and more rapid intervention methods among Alliance members
  • Making sure that Sahel Alliance activities and achievements (projects, intervention modalities and results of the thematic pillars) are systematically disseminated to members as well as to focal points and partners in the G5 countries
  • Leading a team of five highly motivated professionals, ensuring planning of the unit is in line with strategies decided by the members of the Alliance and operations of the unit are effective






Your profile


  • Master's degree in economics, political science or in a comparable subject
  • Many years of experience in management/leadership positions with demonstrated experience in operating complex, newly established structures
  • Many years of experience in international cooperation and development, particularly in coordinating and harmonizing donors
  • Good knowledge of the cultural, political and economic context of the Sahel region
  • Ability to create and lead professional networks, to grasp and anticipate political issues and to maintain close relationships with a broad range of public, private and civil society stakeholders
  • Proficiency in French and English (both speaking and writing); Fluency in German is an asset






Location information


The operational base of the project will be in Brussels. The assignment will require missions to developing countries. Health care: The Belgian healthcare system is one of the best in Europe. Climate: Brussels has a temperate climate with four seasons spanning the whole year. Temperatures are relatively mild during the whole year with the average low at 1°C in winter and 23°C in summer. School situation: Brussels has several international kindergarten/nurseries/preschools as well as international schools, including a German school. The location is suitable for families with children.
